Jurisdiction

Global (US, EU, Canada, Australia, UK, and most countries)

Who must comply

All websites with significant traffic or business importance. Required by ADA (US), European Accessibility Act (EU), Section 508 (US federal), and equivalent laws in 50+ countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Level A, AA, and AAA?
Level A: Minimum accessibility (25 SC). Level AA: Standard requirement (50 SC total). Level AAA: Enhanced (all SC including optional). Most laws require AA. AAA is for specialized sites (government, education, health).
Do I need to meet all 50 success criteria?
Legally, you need Level AA (50 criteria). Some specific criteria may not apply (e.g., audio description applies only if videos exist). But default assumption is all 50 apply unless SC specifically allows exceptions.
Is WCAG 2.1 or WCAG 2.2 the standard?
WCAG 2.1 is the current legal standard (2026). WCAG 2.2 is published but not yet legally mandated. WCAG 3.0 is in development but won't be ready for 2-3 years.
What about mobile apps? Does WCAG apply?
WCAG applies to web content. Mobile apps have similar requirements under ADA. Apple (APOD) and Android (accessibility APIs) have their own standards, but WCAG principles apply.
Can I have exceptions for technical difficulty?
Technically, no. But proportionality matters. If 99% of content is accessible, courts may view 1% non-compliant as acceptable if you're working on it. Ignored violations are indefensible.
